In 2009, the East Mountain High School Governing Council began awarding a scholarship for future educators. In 2011, the scholarship was renamed in the memory of Jim L. Healy, EMHS Governing Council member and teacher.

The Jim L. Healy Memorial Scholarship, valued at $1,000, will be granted to a graduating EMHS senior. The applicant for the Scholarship must present:

  • evidence of choosing education as college major and an aspiration to pursue teaching as a future career,and/or
  • evidence of an intense passion for study and learning especially in the areas of literature, writing and a desire to pursue lifelong learning.

The Scholarship recipient shall be a graduating senior of EMHS, accepted to either a 4-year accredited college or university, or an EMHS student currently enrolled in such a college or university. The beneficiary of the Scholarship may use the Scholarship in support of his/her educational expenses. The Scholarship does not have to be paid back. However, the school encourages the Scholarship recipients to educate students in the spirit of East Mountain High School by teaching with passion for the subject, expressing concern for each individual student and maintaining a commitment to excellence.

About Jim L. Healy

In 1997, Debbie and Jim Healy were two of the first community members to express their interest in a new high school to be built in the East Mountains. Debbie and Jim believed in being active in this dream and when the school opened its doors in 2000, Debbie was volunteering at EMHS and Jim soon joined the school’s Governing Council. While serving nearly nine years on the Council, Jim was a member of nearly every committee and served as the Council chair for three years.

Both Jake and Alissa Healy graduated from East Mountain High School.  Today, Jake holds a Master's in English from UNM and is working towards a second Master's in Computer Engineering. He teaches freshmen English at CNM. Alissa is an archeologist with a degree in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University, and is now pursuing a Master's in Human Geography at UNM. Jake's wife Carmen also has a Master's in English from UNM and is an English and Literature teacher at EMHS.

Jim was truly a Renaissance man, one who had a wide range of accomplishments and intellectual interests. He operated a successful business for a number of years, and he loved literature and poetry. But he also had greater passion – he loved kids and he was delighted by the thought of becoming a teacher, especially a teacher at EMHS. So in his fifties, when many retirees are content to play golf and ponder the meaning of life, Jim returned to college to pursue and eventually earn his teaching credentials.  He was so excited about teaching and about the kids in his classes at EMHS. He loved his students and he couldn’t stop talking about them and the joy they gave to each other.

Jim’s teaching career was far too short, but he left an indelible mark at EMHS. In memory of Jim L Healy and of his contribution to this fine school, East Mountain High School is proud to establish the Jim L. Healy Memorial Scholarship.
